Straightforward II

for piano [1999] | duration: 5’00”

Never before has the spectrum of musical genres and styles been as diverse as it is today. As a composer, I feel attracted to a wide range of tendencies and sonic worlds, and I am continually striving to connect various influences in a personal and meaningful way. At times, this has resulted in a kind of “oscillation” between a more cerebral approach and one guided more by intuition – though never fully excluding either.

In straightforward II, the use of familiar musical elements creates an exciting balancing act: perpetually steering away from the risk of latent banality, the piece aims to strike an equilibrium between harmony and rhythm. Where, for example, triads evoke something “popular,” the regularity of meter is deliberately disrupted. In this way, distance is created from traditional elements, neutralizing their effect and giving the impression that familiarity arises unintentionally, by chance, almost as an aside.
